Specific Activities
Members make weekly visits to three aged care facilities in the Parish to:

  • engage in conversation
  • bring cheerful support
  • create opportunities for prayer
  • distribute Communion, if desired.

They also perform a number of organizational tasks including liaison with the facility coordinator, and keeping records of visits made. Members also arrange for hospitality and music for the Family Mass which is held once a year in September.
Each mecwaCare facility has a monthly Anointing Mass arranged by the team with Fr. Laurie.
Time Commitment Required by Members

  • Weekly visits have been made to two facilities, and bi-weekly to the third venue, with special attention given to the seasons of Easter and Christmas. At these times cards are created for residents and their families.
  • We support families whenever needed and are ready to be called upon at the time of illness or when death is near.
  • All volunteers are free of any involvement during the month of January.

Noel Miller Centre: 9.30-11.30 each Thursday
McKinley House: Every second Thursday for 30 minutes.
mecwaCare Malvern Road: 9.30-11.30 each Wednesday
Areas for Future Development
Ongoing formation will be provided for all team members with special focus on:

  • the ability to lead prayer in a creative manner,
  • the art of acting sensitively in any given situation,
  • developing leadership skills.

Masses will also be arranged whereby next of kin are invited to celebrate Mass at the facility.
New Members
New members are welcome. Aged care facilities require that all volunteers:

  • spend time in becoming familiar with the actual facility;
  • are interviewed by mecwaCare and attend an orientation session;
  • learn about the overall process from the Coordinator;
  • undergo a review at the end of the first month.

Parishioners can offer assistance for single events or tasks as long as they have fulfilled the requirements set out above.
